Are you building the career you want, or the one you think is possible for you?
The other day I was chatting with a client - a senior executive in a global financial services firm.
He doesn't love his job (ok, he hates his job) and he knows that he is meant for something bigger and different.
When I asked him what he wanted to do next, he told me about all of the other internal roles he thought he could get and the pros and cons of each.
I had to stop him to ask:
Are these the job you really WANT or are these the job you think it is POSSIBLE for you to get?
He had to acknowledge he was limiting himself to what he thought was possible - and he had never actually paused to ask what it is he really wanted.
When we started to talk about what he actually wants all of the fears and judgements came rushing to the surface - what about his unvested equity (aka - his golden handcuffs)? Would he be able to make as much money somewhere else? What would his colleagues think?
Yes - you have to work through the fear and judgements of going after what you want.
But what happens more often is that the fear and judgements hold you back from even knowing or admitting what it is that you actually want.
Are you focused on building a career that you really want OR are you focused on what you think is possible for yourself?
The truth is that it is possible to have a career that you really want - without sacrificing your financial security.
Where are you keeping yourself small by focusing on the most obvious options vs allowing yourself to dream big?
Where are you focused on what you could lose instead of what you could gain?
What are you worried about what a change may cost you, instead of thinking about the cost of staying exactly where you are right now?
If these questions make you feel uncomfortable, that is a sign that deep down you know that you are meant to create a career with the meaning, income and impact that you truly want.
If this is you, how do you get started?
Start by journalling for 5 mins to the prompt:
If anything is possible for me, what would I love?
Let the answer flow out of you - the only way you do this wrong is to censor or judge what you right down. You need to get below the judgements to figure out what you truly want.
