One of my biggest career regrets…

Your comfort zone is killing you.

I know that is an over-used phrase, but it is 100% true.

For years I had a job that was “not that bad".

It looked good on paper, and sounded good at dinner parties.

My work life balance was decent.

I was paid well.

My boss liked me (and I liked him).

But deep down, I knew I was meant for something different.

Something bigger.

Something where I could take up space and truly be myself.

I would daydream about being fired so I could be free to do something new.

Even though I wasn't actually working that many hours per week, I was burnt out because the role didn't align with my values and where I was going. I felt tired all the time. I had to literally drag myself out of bed in the morning.

Did I do anything about it? Of course not!

I mean I would complain about it to my husband, tell him how the company wasn't really taking advantage of how awesome I was (they weren't!).

But it took me almost 2 years of feeling that way, and the boss who liked me leaving the company for me to do anything about it.

Why?

  • Because staying in the comfort of a job that was “not that bad” felt 100x easier than admitting to myself that it wasn't what I wanted.

  • Because it felt scary to take a risk and leave the comfort of a company I had worked at for a long time.

  • Because it was “not that bad" and I thought that may be all I deserved.

It took me 2 years to start networking to find a new job. To finally hire a coach to help me figure out what I wanted to do next in my life. To start my coaching business as a side hustle.

The confidence I found AS SOON AS I made the decision that the role was BAD ENOUGH to do something about was incredible.

I regret that I spent those 2 years feeling sorry for myself. Taking action faster would have meant that I could have seen how great things are when you admit that you deserve more than “not that bad.”

I would have had 2 more years chasing my dreams vs waiting for others to make them come true. I would have had 2 more years feeling confident and energized, instead of drained and burnt out.

There is power in simply making the decision that what you are doing is not what you want to be doing 6 or 12 months from now and starting to take action to figure out what is next for you.

That decision pushes you outside your comfort zone - because staying in a job that is “not that bad” is the definition of a comfort zone.

You deserve work that is amazing, excellent, challenging, stimulating, and that pushes you out of your comfort zone on the regular.

Are you going to spend another 6 months with “not that bad” OR are you ready to bet on yourself and create a career that makes you excited to get out of bed in the morning?

If you are ready to take action and create a career that makes you excited to get out of bed in the morning reply NOT THAT BAD and we can have a free clarity call to help you figure out your next steps. The best time to start is today.
